Center for New Liberalism Condemns Far-Right’s Attacks on PEPFAR, Urges Congress to Reauthorize the Program

The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a public health initiative that has saved millions of lives, is facing a fast-approaching reauthorization deadline on September 30. Unfortunately, despite PEPFAR’s massive success, far-right Republicans are attempting to dismantle the program.

Center for New Liberalism Director Colin Mortimer released the following statement in response:

“PEPFAR is without a doubt one of the best and most impactful uses of federal dollars that the United States has ever invested. Since being introduced, the program has saved more than 25 million lives across the world and improved the lived experiences of countless more.

The recent reports that far-right Republicans are spreading blatant falsehoods about the program in an attempt to kill the program are morally abhorrent, and the Center for New Liberalism condemns them in the strongest possible terms. PEPFAR has historically enjoyed strong bipartisan support from organizations across the political spectrum, including countless faith organizations and LGBT organizations that have come together in support of this program.

PEPFAR is a common-sense program that deserves to be reauthorized immediately and unconditionally. We applaud the pragmatic members of the New Democrat Coalition and the Blue Dog Coalition that have voiced their support for reauthorization.”
